In a recent print edition, Corriere dello Sport stated that Aston Villa are facing stiff competition from Newcastle United for Juventus defensive ace Gleison Bremer this summer. It has been mentioned that the Villans are showing interest in landing the Brazilian talent.
Bremer’s Good Run Of Form In Serie A
Bremer was a decent performer at the centre of Juve’s backline last season when he put in a series of dominant displays defensively in Serie A. The 26-year-old scored five times and earned one assist in 43 matches for the Turin club in the previous campaign across various competitions.
The Brazilian talent was solid when defending inside his half based on his average of 1.0 tackles, 1.4 interceptions and 3.8 clearances per 90 minutes in Serie A football. He was even excellent when distributing possession from the back after making 90.2% of his attempted passes in the Italian top tier (stats via whoscored).
Bremer is under contract at the Allianz Stadium until 2027. Hence, Aston Villa will have to launch a big move if they are serious about recruiting him on the cheap this summer.
Aston Villa Facing Stiff Competition For Bremer: Is He Worth The Fight?
Bremer is a solid tackler of the ball and can read the danger well to make a few timely interceptions for his team inside his half. He doesn’t hesitate to put his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the offensive and can also pose an aerial threat from indirect set-pieces.
The Brazilian centre-back excels at playing his way out from the back and can use his robust 1.88m frame to win a few 50-50 aerial duels for his side. However, there are some concerns over whether he would be able to make a smooth transition to life in England.
Someone with Bremer’s skillset will no doubt enhance the quality of Aston Villa boss Unai Emery’s defensive department. He could even help the Villans push for a European spot in the Premier League next season.
At 26, Bremer is about to enter his prime which makes him a decent option for the West Midlands club to consider ahead of the new campaign. Hence, he will be well worth the fight, so Emery should try everything in his power to lure Bremer to Villa Park this year.
