It’s going to be a long and hard transfer window for Sunderland as the club don’t have the funds to spend like they did last season and force a big turnaround in the second half. The Black Cats have made their life hard after spending too much on wages and they haven’t recouped good money through player sales which is why they are in a precarious situation.
David Moyes has managed to do a really good job after a bad start to the season and recent results have given them a chance to once again save themselves. A positive result against Liverpool started the New Year on a high but they need to bring in some consistency to their game if they are to avoid a nervy finish.
One or two signings is the max the Mackems can expect and Moyes will have to choose this transfer targets wisely. The departure (AFCON) of players like Wahbi Khazri, Didier N’Dong and Lamine Kone will make things a lot harder for Moyes. Defensive reinforcements are key and recent reports suggest that the Black Cats could move in for Bournemouth full-back Tyrone Mings.
Mings rose to prominence at Ipswich Town as his impressive performances on the left attracted some of the Premier League sides. Predominantly a left-back, Mings is versatile enough to play as a centre-back as well.
Moyes has a pretty good left-back in Partick Van Aanholt and if he wants to sign another full-back, then he perhaps has plans of playing Van Aanholt in a slightly more advanced role. With N’Dong departing for the AFCON, there will be a void in the midfield. Although Rodwell is the most likely player to fill in, Van Aanholt has shown that he can be a good prospect in the midfield as his driving runs can be a potent weapon on the counter.
Mings was touted to have an explosive start to his Premier League career when he signed for a then club record fee of £8m. However, an anterior cruciate ligament injury meant that his career was stalled by a year.
He’s been named on the bench for most of the games and played 106 minutes in Bournemouth’s EFL Cup game against Preston as a centre back. His versatility could be serve Sunderland well but it’ll have to be a permanent signing as Sunderland already have two loan signings from the same league.
