In a recent report, Cadena Sar stated that Aston Villa remain interested in Villarreal defender Pau Torres. It has been claimed that the Villans are still keen on recruiting the Spanish centre-back this summer.
Torres’ Solid Campaign At Villarreal Recently
Torres experienced a solid season with the Yellow Submarine recently as he continued to be a rock at the back for them in La Liga. The Villarreal-born defensive ace scored once in 39 appearances for the Spanish club in the previous campaign in various competitions.
The 26-year-old has proved his worth as a reliable defender by averaging 1.3 tackles and 4.1 clearances per game in La Liga. He even distributed possession relatively well based on his pass success rate of 85.3% in the Spanish top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current deal at the La Liga club will run out next summer which could open the door for the Villans to get him on board in this off-season.
Should Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery Snap Torres Up This Summer?
Torres is a good tackler of the ball and can read the danger quickly to make a few timely interceptions for his side on the defensive third of the pitch. He doesn’t hesitate to put his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the front foot and is even proficient at playing his way out from the back.
The Spaniard can use his robust 1.91m frame to dominate the opposition attackers in the air. He excels at playing in both centre-back positions which could make him a valuable member of the Villans‘ squad in the coming years.
We can expect Torres to bring more bite and steel to Aston Villa boss Unai Emery’s defence. He is good enough to secure a regular starting spot at Villa Park next season. However, the jury is still out on whether he can maintain his good form in the Premier League.
At 26, Torres has his best years ahead of him which makes him a decent option for the West Midlands club to pursue this summer. All in all, Emery would be wise to snap the Spaniard up before the start of the new campaign.
