Things have recently been pretty gloomy for Sunderland in terms of injuries and resources. After numerous injuries to their key players, which crippled them in the first few months of the Premier League season, it is immensely difficult now for them to move out of the relegation zone. Amidst all this, their board revealed the huge monetary crisis that the club is going through the moment.
The Black Cats don’t have the financial prowess to bring in players this winter, not even on loan. Hence, the work for Sunderland boss David Moyes has become more than difficult as he has to now identify players who are free agents and wouldn’t demand high wages.
And as per latest reports, the Black Cats are keeping an eye on Momo Sissoko, the former Liverpool midfielder, who is looking for a Premier League return. The 31-year-old has long been an absentee from competitive football. His last two clubs have been Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua and Indian Super League side Pune City.
He is a free agent now and Moyes deems him a good option to further bolster his midfield with whatever limited money he has in his transfer kitty. Sissoko has managed to keep himself fit, so that’s one positive aspect as he won’t have to sweat it out initially.
His lack of fitness was one of the main reasons Tony Pulis didn’t offer him a contract at West Bromwich Albion last summer. Although registered with West Brom in order to take part in an Under-23 fixture, he is eligible to play for another club this season.
Sissoko will be bringing with himself some immense experience in the midfield. His stints at Valencia, Liverpool, Juventus, Fiorentina and PSG definitely make him a valuable player. And Moyes isn’t going to get him that easy as there is a long list of Championship club willing to get his signature.
A defensive midfielder by nature, Sissoko has a tremendous work rate both on and off the ball and at 191cm, he has a huge frame that makes him aerially domineering. His ball interception skill was highly appreciated by many in his short stint at Pune City and Moyes will expect him to continue his overbearing presence in Sunderland’s midfield.
Sunderland have been much better since November and their recent draw with Liverpool has further given them a huge boost. With teams above them like Crystal Palace and Middlesbrough not having good results either, the Black Cats are looking to cross over the relegation wall.
