In a recent report, Roma Giallorossa stated that Tottenham Hotspur are facing tough competition for AS Roma defender Roger Ibanez this summer. It has been claimed that Spurs will have to rival Chelsea and West Ham United in the race to land the Brazilian centre-back in this offseason.
Ibanez’s Impressive Run Of Form In Serie A
Ibanez enjoyed a solid campaign at the Italian club as he put in a run of decent performances for them on the defensive end of the field. The 24-year-old scored three times in 48 matches for Jose Mourinho’s side last season across all competitions.
The Canela-born talent gave a good account of himself when defending inside his half based on his average of 2.0 tackles, 2.0 interceptions and 2.8 clearances per 90 minutes in the Serie A. He was even accurate when distributing possession from the back as he completed 88% of his attempted passes in the Italian top-flight (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Italian club is set to run out in 2025, so it won’t be easy for Spurs to win the race for his services during this summer transfer window.
Is Ibanez A Good Fit For Tottenham Hotspur Boss Angelos Postecoglou?
Ibanez is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to make some timely interceptions for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball to keep the opposition at bay and is a tidy passer of the ball as well from the back.
Therefore, the Brazilian defender would be a good fit for Angelos Postecoglou’s brand of football at Tottenham. He will inject more bite and steel into Spurs‘ backline and help the North London club challenge for some major trophies in the coming seasons.
Ibanez has what it takes to earn a regular starting spot at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Furthermore, at 24, the Brazilian centre-back’s best years are ahead of him which makes him a decent signing for Postecoglou to make in this off-season.
However, there are some concerns over whether Ibanez can adapt to the physical nature and high intensity of Premier League football if Spurs manage to land him this summer.
