Swansea City are in all kinds of troubles at the moment, both on and off the pitch. Given their current form, a relegation looks quite imminent at the moment, and it means a large exodus of quality players. With the winter transfer period on, clubs have already started making inquiries.
As per reports, West Bromwich Albion are planning to bid for Swansea City defender Federico Fernandez. Baggies boss Tony Pulis is apparently considering launching a £7m bid for the Argentinian enforcer, who was part of the international squad that reached the World Cup final in 2014.
It was in the summer of 2014 that Fernandez joined Swansea City from Italian giants Napoli. His first season was a hit as Swansea City finished in the top of the Premier League table in the eighth position and it was then that the Argentine started grabbing eyeballs. Now, with the club performing atrociously and Fernandez having just 18 months left on his contract at Liberty Stadium, a departure looks likely.
The 27-year-old defender hasn’t had the best of the the season, more so for his broken toe, which kept him out since early November. He has, however, returned and is expected to feature against Crystal Palace with Jordi Amat ruled out on Tuesday.
An offer of £7m would surely not tempt Swansea City for such a talented player, but it would certainly start the bargaining. The Welsh club is looking to add options in the center half of the field and might be tempted with a better offer.
At 190cm, the Argentine is a brilliant passer of the ball and had a man of the match performance in Swansea’s incredible 5-4 finish against Crystal Palace in November. He has managed to score once in his eight appearances for Swansea.
Although his playing time has been quite limited this season, he has made 20 interceptions, 67 clearances, and seven blocks so far. With a passing accuracy of 80% from the deep, he could be the ideal Tony Pulis player. Pulis has been infamous for his tactics of slowing the game and parking the bus against free-flowing opponents and Fernandez could be ideal for the task.
Unlike Swansea, the Baggies have been brilliant this campaign so far barring the hiccup they experienced in between. They are currently in the eighth position with 29 points and given Everton’s faltering run so far, Pulis would surely expect a further ascent as the season progresses.
Federico has won 43% of his average duels this season and his performance would only improve as the season progresses. He could be a brilliant addition to the Albion defense who have some ageing and heavy legs at the back.
