Liverpool’s central midfield role has been hugely understaffed. Jurgen Klopp had serious selection dilemmas for that position against Sunderland after Jordan Henderson got injured against Manchester City. Emre Can look quite uncomfortable in the central midfield’s role and Liverpool’s frustrating draw against Sunderland was a result of that.
Liverpool have to bolster numerous positions this transfer window and the central midfield has emerged as something that needs Klopp’s immediate attention. And as per reports, RB Leipzig midfielder Emil Forsberg is a top target for Jurgen Klopp. The Sweden international came into Liverpool’s radar after the Reds missed out on Christian Pulisic last month.
Pulisic has emerged as a key player in Thomas Tuchel’s plans and Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc has clarified about Pulisic’s future in the club.
Liverpool were linked with a move for last month, and that link has grown stronger as the window opens. The 25-year-old Swede has been in hot form in his debut season in the Bundesliga and his string of good performances have impressed many European clubs. And reports in Germany suggest Leipzig would not accept less than £20m for him.
In his 12 Bundesliga appearances so far, he has scored a whopping five goals and provided eight assists. He is in the form of his life and it might be the ideal time for Liverpool to grab him. Completing 288 passes this season with a pass accuracy of 79%, of which 78% were forward passes is nothing to be sneered at.
At 179cm, he might lack the aerial prowess needed in English Premier League, but he is brilliant with the ball at his feet. Whether it’s through ball, long shot, set pieces, finishing or dribbling past opponents, Forsberg has excelled in all departments this season and at times has looked simply unstoppable.
He has a knack towards building up the game through short passes and is really fierce on the counter, which makes him a more than an ideal option for Klopp’s style of play. His low stamina, however, could play a weak link in his rise in the top flight of English football.
RB Leipzig have been phenomenal this season sitting in the second position currently and the club has been backed by the wealth of Red Bull having no financial need to sell. But, that won’t stop them from considering good offers coming their way for the player. And when a club like Liverpool is coming your way, the player would surely reconsider his future.
And given Liverpool’s current league form, where the Reds have a real chance of winning the title after many years, Klopp won’t be waiting to bring in players, whom he thinks could help the club achieve the goal.
