In a recent report, The Daily Mail stated that Newcastle United are keeping tabs on Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen. It is understood that the Magpies are eyeing a move to acquire the services of the Danish centre-back in the summer.
Christensen’s Solid Season In Spanish Football
Christensen is experiencing a decent campaign at the Catalan club as he has managed to put in a series of impressive displays at the centre of Barca’s backline. The Danish talent has been involved in 25 matches for Barca this season, picking up one assist in the process across various competitions.
The 26-year-old has given a good account of himself on the defensive end of the field based on his average of 0.9 tackles, 0.9 interceptions and 2.6 clearances per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has even been excellent when distributing the ball from the back after completing 93.9% of his attempted passes in the Spanish top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current deal with Barcelona is set to run out in the summer of 2026. However, Xavi might be forced to sell him this summer to abide by the Financial Fair Play regulations which could open the door for Newcastle to snap him up later this year.

Christensen is a good tackler of the ball and can make a few timely interceptions for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the offensive. Standing at 1.87m, he can use his strong frame to win a few 50-50 aerial duels and excels at playing his way out from the back. Furthermore, he has already got previous experience of playing in the Premier League with Chelsea and won’t take any time to settle into life in England.
Hence, Christensen would be a great acquisition for the Magpies if they can find a way to get him on board in the off-season. He would enhance the quality of Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe‘s defence and could help the Tyneside club challenge for a top-four place in the Premier League over the next few years.
Therefore, the Magpies would be wise to try everything in their power to lure the Barcelona defensive ace to St. James’ Park when the transfer window commences later this year.
