In a recent interview with Sky Sports‘ Gary Neville, Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe revealed that he was left confused by the VAR offside decision that went against his side in the win versus Nottingham Forest in the Premier League recently.
Howe said,
“I haven’t had a chance to watch it back. I couldn’t believe it at the time that the referee was going to the monitor for an offside. I’d need to be sat down and explained the rules on that one. Disappointed for Elliot because that was a massive moment in his career.”
Despite the controversial decision, Newcastle went on to win that game by a 2-1 scoreline which keeps them in a good position in the top-four race this season.
The VAR Incident That Went Against Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe
The controversial decision was made by referee Paul Tierney after he was advised by VAR to go and review the incident. Elliott Anderson’s goal looked like a legitimate goal at the time before Tierney decided to overturn the goal, much to the bewilderment of Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.
Anderson’s goal was ruled out as off-side but the Magpies went on to win the Premier League contest by a 2-1 scoreline.
As of 19 March 2023, the Tyneside club find themselves in the fifth position of the league table, two points behind fourth-placed, Tottenham Hotspur, but with two matches in hand.
With some exciting fixtures coming up against Manchester United, West Ham United and Brentford after the international break, the Newcastle fans have every reason to be excited about their club’s chances of clinching a UEFA Champions League spot at the end of this season. Howe will now hope that his side gets a few important decisions their way as the top-four race heats up in the final few weeks of this campaign.
