In a recent report, The Sun claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a move for Everton star Jordan Pickford. It has been mentioned that Spurs are showing interest in acquiring the services of the English custodian this summer.
Pickford’s Unimpressive Season At Merseyside So Far
Pickford is experiencing a difficult campaign at Everton as he has struggled to help his team pick up a run of favourable results in the Premier League. The England international has conceded 41 goals and secured six clean sheets in 27 matches for the Toffees this season across all competitions.
The 29-year-old deserves a lot of credit for averaging 1.2 clearances and 8.0 long balls per game in the Premier League. However, he needs to work on improving his ball distribution after making just 53.7% of his attempted passes in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
Pickford is under contract at Goodison Park until the summer of 2027. Therefore, it won’t be easy for Spurs to land the English keeper on the cheap at the end of this campaign.
Is Pickford A Decent Option For Tottenham Hotspur Boss Antonio Conte?
Pickford can be a safe pair of hands in between the sticks when he is playing well on the pitch. He has got good reflexes that help him make a few solid saves at the back. The English keeper is a decent handler of the ball as well and doesn’t hesitate to come out of his lines to clear the danger when required. However, as mentioned earlier, he has to find a way to improve his passing accuracy if he intends to be a success story at a top club like Tottenham.
We can expect Pickford to serve as a decent replacement for Hugo Lloris who has had his fair share of injury concerns of late. At 29, the Everton keeper’s best years are ahead of him which makes him a good option for Tottenham boss Antonio Conte to consider during the summer transfer period.
All in all, the North London club should think about launching a big move to sign the English sensation from Everton at the end of this campaign as he could help them challenge for a top-four spot once again over the next few years. However, Spurs might be better off opting for a more proven goalkeeping option if they want to contend for the Premier League title as Pickford is yet to prove his worth as a consistent performer at the highest level.
