In a recent report, Fichajes revealed that Barcelona have identified Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi as a target. It has been claimed that the Catalan outfit are hoping to acquire the services of the Spanish talent by arranging a player-plus-cash offer for him in the summer.
Zubimendi’s Impressive Season At The Reale Arena
Zubimendi is enjoying a solid campaign in Spanish football as he has managed to put in a string of dominant displays at the centre of Sociedad’s midfield. The 24-year-old has featured in 27 matches for his current club this season, netting one goal and grabbing three assists in the process across multiple competitions.
The Spanish midfield ace has proven himself to be a capable presence at the centre of the park based on his average of 1.8 tackles, 1.0 interceptions and 1.6 clearances per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has even been excellent when distributing the ball from midfield after making 85.1% of his attempted passes in the Spanish first division (stats via whoscored).
Zubimendi is under contract at the Spanish club until the summer of 2027. Thus, it won’t be easy for Barcelona to arrange a move to sign him at the end of this campaign.
Should Barcelona Boss Xavi Bring Zubimendi On Board?
Zubimendi is a solid tackler of the ball and can read the danger well to secure the ball back for his side on the defensive end of the pitch. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the front foot and can offer decent protection for his teammates at the back.
The Spaniard is a good passer of the ball as well and can create some inviting chances for others around him in the opponent’s half. He is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also function as a box-to-box midfielder if his manager tells him to do so.
We can expect Zubimendi to add more bite and steel to Barcelona head coach Xavi‘s midfield department and could serve as an ideal replacement for Sergio Busquets who has entered the final stage of his playing career at the Nou Camp. Furthermore, he knows the La Liga well by now and won’t take any time settling into life at Barca.
All in all, the Catalan outfit would be wise to try everything they can to bring Zubimendi on board in the summer as he is good enough to help them challenge for even more major silverware in the coming seasons.
