In a recent report, The Daily Mail claimed that Aston Villa are set to reignite their interest in Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams. It has been revealed that the Villans want to acquire the services of the Spanish talent during the summer transfer period.
Williams’ Decent Record In Spanish Football This Season
Williams is experiencing an encouraging season at Bilbao as he has put in a series of impressive displays on the right side of their attack. The 20-year-old has featured in 25 matches for the Spanish side during this campaign, finding the back of the net on six occasions and grabbing six assists in the process across all fronts.
The gifted youngster has given a good account of himself in the final third based on his average of 1.8 shots, 1.3 key passes and 1.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has even been excellent when distributing possession in the final third after making 79.1% of his attempted passes in the Spanish top-flight (stats via whoscored).
His current deal with the La Liga club is set to expire in the summer of 2024. Hence, the Villans could potentially land him on the cheap next summer.
Is Nico Williams A Good Option For Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery?
Williams can strike the ball with venom and accuracy from long range and has got the eye to play some decisive passes in the final third. He is a good dribbler with the ball as well and can contribute by scoring and creating his fair share of goals from the wide areas. The Spanish talent is primarily a right-sided wide player but can also function as a left-winger if his manager tells him to do so. However, there are some concerns over whether he has what it takes to cope with the physical nature and high intensity of Premier League football.
We can expect Williams to add more firepower to Aston Villa boss Unai Emery‘s attack. He could even help the Villans push for a European place in the Premier League over the next few years.
Williams is already good enough to earn a regular starting spot at Villa Park and has the potential to become a future star. Thus, it makes sense for the West Midlands club to engineer a move to land him at the end of this campaign as he will be a brilliant option for Emery to consider next summer.
