The European Super League is back. Like a zombie refusing to die, the big bad money grab called the ‘European Super League’ has returned among the headlines.
After the disastrous PR from last time which left ESL licking their wounds and taking a step back from the ambitious project, this time they have improvements. A22 Sports Management was created by Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus to push through the super league.
This time there would be no permanent members and could contain up to 80 teams in multi tier competition. Most importantly, there would be promotion and relegation but in a very limited scope if my understanding of the rules is correct.
The money on offer is also substantially lesser than what the Premier League is distributing which is another reason why this league is primarily being backed by all non Premier League clubs.
Will this be a lifeline for Manchester City?
However, if Manchester City thinks that this will be a lifeline for them, they are sadly mistaken.
According to the new Premier League handbook, the first page of the charter (Point 9) expressly prohibits any club from joining a breakaway league.
All the Premier League owners have signed the charter, including Manchester City.
Also, the UK Government is really against this and will probably bring legislation stopping any English clubs from participating in this breakaway league.
All in all, Manchester City will not be joining the European Super League. We are sorry Man City fans, but even if you feel, you have been mistreated, there is no legal way for the club to join this breakaway European league as things stand.
The only way for Man City to put all their troubles behind them is to prove that the allegations levied by the Premier League on them is incorrect in a court of law.
