In a recent report, Korea JoongAng Daily claimed that Leeds United could cool their interest in Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Hwang Hee-chan. It has been revealed that the Whites are unlikely to go back in for the South Korea international following Jesse Marsch’s sacking recently.
Hwang’s Recent Numbers At The Molineux Stadium This Season
Hwang has been a valuable member of Wolves’ match-day squad during this campaign and deserves some credit for producing a few eye-catching displays for them in the final third. The 27-year-old has found the back of the net once and picked up three assists in 22 matches for the West Midlands club this season on all fronts.
The South Korean sensation has seen a lot of his appearances come off the bench which explains why he is only averaging 0.4 shots, 0.5 key passes and 0.4 dribbles per game in Premier League football. He has even been tidy when distributing the ball deep inside the opponent’s half after making 78.2% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Molineux Stadium is set to expire in the summer of 2026. Thus, he won’t have been a cheap option for the Whites to pursue this year.
Are Leeds United Making The Right Call With Regards To Hwang?
Hwang is proficient at finding space for himself to get a few strikes in at goal. He has got the vision to create some decent chances for his teammates in the final third.
The South Korea international can be a decent finisher in the final third when he is playing with confidence on the pitch. He is primarily a centre-forward but can also fill in as a wide player if his manager asks him to do so. However, the gifted forward is far from consistent on the attacking end of the pitch and is yet to prove his worth at the highest level.
At 27, Hwang is about to enter his prime and would have no doubt added some much-needed firepower to Leeds United‘s attack. However, the Whites need a proven goal-scorer, so they are making the right call by cooling their interest in the South Korean talent as he is not good enough to earn a regular starting spot at Elland Road.
The Yorkshire giants should rather focus on moving in for some of their other targets if they want to have a better season in English football next year.
