According to a report from Liverpool Echo, it was stated that Liverpool’s failure to make an offer for Sofyan Amrabat, despite being in a pole position to land him, has forced him into talks with Barcelona instead. The Reds had been speculated of moving in for the Morocco international who impressed in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, however, with rumoured talks failing to lead to an offer the Defensive midfielder could now be heading over to La Liga.
Amrabat’s Solid Season In Both Club And International Football
Amrabat has enjoyed a solid campaign at the Florence-based club as he has managed to put in a series of impressive displays for the Italian outfit in the middle of the park. The 26-year-old has made 24 appearances for the Italian club this season but is yet to find the back of the net or even assist a goal for them across all fronts.
Although he hasn’t been productive in the attacking third the Huizen-born talent has caught the eye with his defensive performances for his nation in the 2022 FIFA World Cup recently and did well to average 2.3 tackles, 0.9 interceptions and 1.4 clearances per game in the competition. He was even tidy when distributing possession from midfield after making 90.3% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Amrabat’s current contract at Fiorentina is set to expire in the summer of 2024. Thus, the Reds had an amazing chance to land him on a cut-price deal if they had made a serious offer for him.
Huge Blow For Liverpool Boss Jurgen Klopp?
Amrabat is a good tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his team in the middle of the park. He doesn’t hesitate to put his foot through the ball when needed and is a decent passer of the ball as well. Amrabat is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also fill in as a central defender if his manager asks him to do so.
Amrabat could have added more bite and steel to Jurgen Klopp‘s midfield department and increased competition for places within his match-day squad. Moreover, with Ibrahima Konate and Virgil Van Dijk both injured for a couple of weeks, his arrival could have provided Klopp with some defensive cover in his backline.
Klopp will now have to find a way to work with the players already at his disposal to help the Merseyside club get back in form in order to challenge for the top-four places in the Premier League this season.
