Chelsea have had one hell of a season after a not so bright start under Antonio Conte. The Italian’s three at the back setup has made them title favourites and the mauling at the hands of Arsenal is distant past now.
Conte’s team have done so well that signing players doesn’t appear to be a priority, but that would be looking at the scenario with rose-tinted glasses. Not so long ago, the Blues were being linked with a host of defenders but only managed to sign David Luiz and many deemed the summer transfer window as something which could have gone better.
N’Golo Kante’s presence has taken some of the pressure of the defenders but Chelsea’s run to the summit of the table might not have been the same if they didn’t have their full strength playing XI.
Unlike Liverpool or Manchester City, Chelsea have not had any bad injuries or suspensions to their key players and to their credit, they have taken full advantage of that.
With the winter transfer window almost upon us, Chelsea are likely to strengthen to ensure they avoid any slip-ups in the second half of the season as the Premier League is pretty unpredictable.
Reports indicate that Chelsea want to sign Bayer Leverkusen striker Javier Hernandez to ease the pressure off Diego Costa’s shoulders. The Spaniard has been in scintillating form this season and is currently leading the goal scoring charts in the League. To his credit, he’s managed to get rid of his antics on the pitch as well which have earned him a lot of plaudits from the neutrals.
Hernandez has previous experience of the Premier League having won the league title with Manchester United. He endured a sticky spell in his final few years with the club and made the move to Real Madrid on loan and then permanently to Leverkusen.
He’s thriving in the high-intensity setup under Roger Schmidt and has found his goalscoring touch whilst in Germany. Last season, he managed to score 17 goals in 28 Bundesliga games and his instinctive finishing could be a good option for Conte to have as a plan B or even as a plan A as Batshuayi is still pretty inexperienced.
Teams will try to alter their style against the Blues in the second half of the season and Conte will have to come up with a solution to break open defences, something that Leicester had to do last season.
Hernandez is at the peak of his career and a move back to the Premier League won’t be the worst of decisions considering he’s resurrected his career in Germany.
