In a recent report, The Daily Mail stated that Everton are among clubs hoping to sign Ajax keeper Charlie Setford. It has been mentioned that the Toffees could face competition from Spurs in pursuit of the English custodian.
Setford’s Impressive Rise In Dutch Football
Setford has come through the youth ranks of Ajax but is yet to make a senior appearance for them so far. However, he has caught the eye for the Dutch club at various youth levels.
The English prospect is currently serving as an important member of Ajax’s Under-18 side and has done well to make nine appearances for them, shipping in 12 goals and securing a couple of clean sheets in various competitions. He has also represented the Amsterdam club in Under-17, Under-18, and Under-19 levels.
However, Setford missed a lot of games recently due to a fractured hand recently. Still, there is no denying that he has the potential to become a future star at the highest level. Hence, it is no surprise that Everton are one of the clubs hoping to recruit him.
Should Everton Boss Frank Lampard Get Setford On Board Next Year?
Setford has proven his worth as a safe pair of hands in between the sticks in the youth ranks of Dutch football. He has got decent reflexes and can make some crucial saves for his team when needed. The English talent is a solid handler of the ball as well but is still quite raw and would need time to prove his worth in top-flight football.
Setford’s current contract at Ajax is set to run out at the end of this campaign. Therefore, Everton boss Frank Lampard could potentially land him on a cut-price deal this January or sign him when he becomes a free agent next summer.
At 18, the future is quite promising for Setford as long as he continues to improve his all-around game with each season. He is good enough to become a future starter at Goodison Park. However, at the moment, he is not ready to replace Jordan Pickford in goal at the Merseyside club.
Still, Lampard would be wise to get Setford on board next summer as he has the potential to become a success story at Everton in the long run. Furthermore, he will be available as a free agent which makes him a great bargain buy for the Toffees to pull off in 2023.
