In a recent tweet, journalist Matteo Moretto stated that Liverpool are set to enter talks to land AC Milan midfielder Ismael Bennacer. It has been claimed that the Reds are hoping to acquire the services of the Algerian talent next year.
Bennacer’s Impressive Form At San Siro This Season
Bennacer has offered decent protection for his teammates at the back and has been responsible for putting in some dominant displays at the heart of Milan’s midfield. The Algerian sensation has scored one goal and picked up one assist in 23 matches for the Italian club this season across multiple competitions.
The 25-year-old has established himself as a reliable holding midfielder by averaging 2.3 tackles, 0.8 interceptions, 0.5 clearances, 2.0 key passes and 1.0 dribbles per 90 minutes in Serie A. He has even been excellent when distributing the ball from midfield, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 88.7% in the Italian first division (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at San Siro is set to run out in the summer of 2024 which could open the door for Liverpool to land him on the cheap at the end of this campaign.
What Will Bennacer Add To Liverpool Boss Jurgen Klopp’s Team?
Bennacer is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to make some important interceptions for his team at the centre of the park. He doesn’t hesitate to clear the danger when needed and can create some decent plays for others around him on the attacking end of the field. Bennacer is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also fill in as a box-to-box midfielder or play in the number ten position if asked to do so.
The Algerian midfield ace is a good dribbler with the ball as well and can retain possession well in tight spaces for his side.
Someone with Bennacer’s skillset will undoubtedly add more quality to Jurgen Klopp‘s midfield and increase competition for places within Liverpool‘s match-day squad.
Bennacer is good enough to fight for a regular starting spot at Anfield and could serve as a decent replacement for James Milner, who has entered the final stage of his playing career at the Merseyside club.
Bennacer has what it takes to help the Reds challenge for even more major trophies over the next few years. Therefore, Klopp should focus on getting a deal done for the AC Milan star this January or at the end of this season.
