If a recent report from La Gazzetta Express is believed to be true, Rangers are considering a winter move for Jan Gregus. A miserable run of results cost Giovanni van Bronckhorst his job and the tenure of Michael Beale could kickstart with the arrival of this veteran Slovak midfielder.
While his signing could result in a mixed reaction among the fanbase, there are a few good reasons why the Gers should secure his services. The San Jose Earthquakes star is under contract till December 2022 and the Light Blues could sign him on a Bosman in the January window.
The 31-year-old Slovakia international began his career at his boyhood club Nitra. But he left for Czech outfit Baník Ostrava after a few first-team appearances. He also tried his luck in England with Bolton Wanderers, but the season-long loan in the Championship did not go as per plan.
Meanwhile, his promising stint at Banik earned him a transfer to fellow Fortuna Liga outfit Jablonec. Then he enjoyed his time in Denmark with Copenhagen before leaving for MLS side Minnesota United. Gregus joined San Jose Earthquakes only a year ago, but his time in the US might come to an end soon in favour of returning to Europe.
Why Rangers Should Tie Him Down
Rangers are undergoing a crisis all over the pitch. Midfield is not an exception and the club must aim for quality to resurrect their season. It is not easy to lure big names in winter and the Glasgow giants, therefore, must opt for short-term fixes before scripting a transition under the new gaffer.
Injuries have refrained the Gers from finding stability in the middle of the park. John Lundstram is ever-present, but the likes of Ryan Jack and Glen Kamara have failed to build momentum due to persistent fitness problems. Steven Davis will turn 38 on New Year’s day, whereas James Sands has been forced to feature as a makeshift centre-half amid the long-term absence of Connor Goldson, John Souttar and Filip Helander.
Gregus might not play regularly when everyone is fit and available for selection, but his addition would offer depth and cover both in ‘number 8’ and the deep-lying playmaker role. He is strong, combative and composed, also his ability to orchestrate the game would allow Lundstram to occupy the pockets and operate in the advanced areas of the field. It remains to be seen now whether the Light Blues snap him up in January 2023.
