In a recent print edition, Record claimed that Liverpool are among clubs hoping to land Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez. It has been revealed that the Reds could face competition in the form of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Manchester United in pursuit of the Argentine midfield ace.
Fernandez’s Impressive Run Of Form For Benfica This Season
Fernandez is having a decent campaign in Portuguese football as he put in a run of impressive performances at the centre of the park. The 21-year-old has registered three goals and five assists in 24 matches for the Portuguese club on all fronts.
The San Martin-born talent has given a good account of himself by averaging 2.0 tackles, 1.0 interceptions, 2.0 shots and 1.9 key passes per 90 minutes in Liga Portugal. He has even been accurate with his ball distribution after completing 89.9% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Benfica is set to run out in the summer of 2027. Hence, Liverpool will have to make a big-money offer if they want to bring Fernandez to Anfield next year.
Is Fernandez A Good Choice For Liverpool Boss Jurgen Klopp?
Fernandez is a solid tackler of the ball and can make some timely interceptions for his team in the middle of the park. He can strike the ball with venom and accuracy from long range and has got the vision to set up a handful of clear-cut chances in the final third.
At the moment, Fernandez is performing at a very high level in Portuguese football. However, there are some concerns over whether he could maintain his good form in the Premier League where he will have to adapt to the physical nature of English football.
At 21, the future is quite bright for the Argentine whizkid which makes him an excellent choice for the Reds to consider for the long run. He will add some goals and creativity to Jurgen Klopp‘s midfield department and increase competition for places within his match-day squad.
It makes sense for Liverpool to orchestrate a move to bring Fernandez to Anfield as he could help the Merseyside challenge for even more trophies in the coming seasons. However, he might need some time to settle into life in England and won’t be an instant fix to Klopp’s midfield problems. Still, the pros outweigh the cons of recruiting the Benfica prospect which makes him an ideal option for the Merseysiders to pursue in 2023.
