Liverpool reclaimed their 2nd position from Manchester City as they notched up a come from behind 4-1 victory over Stoke City. Thus they kept the 6-point gap between them and league leaders, Chelsea. They are still the torchbearers when it comes to teams who can challenge the dominant Chelsea side.
Liverpool fell behind to a Walters’ header but were soon back on level terms after Lallana struck to make it 1-1. Roberto Firmino then scored in a matter of minutes to make it 2-1 and hand Liverpool the initiative. Giannelli Imbula then put the ball into his own net before Ryan Shawcross’s backpass was picked up by Daniel Sturridge, which scored his first Premier League goal of the season.
Thus both Manchester City and Liverpool won via 3-goal margins before their epic clash on New Year’s Eve.
Meanwhile, let us take a look at how the Liverpool players performed today.
MIGNOLET- 5.5/10
Might be harsh on him if he is to be blamed for the goal but getting beaten by a header at his near post does raise some eyebrows. Not the most convincing.
CLYNE- 6.5/10
Not his best defensively, especially in the opening stages where he failed to close down Pieters’ cross. The left-back had Clyne on the back-foot for most of the 1st half but the Englishman had more freedom going forward.
LOVREN- 6/10
Nervy display. Lucky to avoid a yellow and stay in contention for the City game.
KLAVAN- 6/10
Given a hard time by Peter Crouch but held his own as the match progressed. Cleared one off the line when Stoke were leading 1-0. Vital contribution in that perspective.
MILNER- 9/10
Typical James Milner performance. Worked hard throughout the 90 minutes. Was great offensively while being a rock in defence. Strong and potent display from him.
LALLANA- 8/10
Slowly attaining consistency. His quality was never in doubt. Standing ovation from the Kop.
HENDERSON- 8/10
Uncomplicated display and effective at the same time. Two brilliant passes throughout the course of the game. Pivotal part of the midfield.
WIJNADUM- 6.5/10
Simple and quiet display. Nothing eye-catching.
MANE- 8/10
Unlucky not to be on the scoresheet. Was at the Stoke defence throughout and stretched the play brilliantly. Had a hand in two goals.
ORIGI- 8/10
A mature performance by the youngster. Took more of a part in the build-up and had a hand in 2 goals. Missed out on a goal himself, though.
FIRMINO- 7.5/10
Started off slow but got into the match. Has to work on his consistency, though.
SUBSTITUTES
CAN- 7/10
Did his job
STURRIDGE-7/10
Got a goal.
MORENO- 7/10
Given freedom on the wings.
