In a recent print edition, SportBILD mentioned that Liverpool are in the race to land Red Bull Leipzig midfielder Konrad Laimer. It has been claimed that the Reds will have to rival Bayern Munich in pursuit of the Austrian talent next year.
Laimer’s Injury-Ravaged Campaign In German Football
Laimer has endured an injury-plagued season at the Red Bull Arena but has done well to put in some solid displays at the centre of Leipzig’s midfield. The 25-year-old has made six appearances for the German club during this campaign, picking up two yellow cards in the process on all fronts.
The Salzburg-born sensation deserves some credit for averaging 2.8 tackles, 1.0 interceptions and 1.8 clearances per 90 minutes in Bundesliga. He has even been tidy with his ball distribution after making 77.3% of his attempted passes in the top tier of German football (stats via whoscored).
Laimer is under contract at Leipzig until the end of this campaign. Therefore, Liverpool could potentially land him on a cut-price fee this January or sign him as a free agent next summer.
Is Laimer A Good Choice For Liverpool Head Coach Jurgen Klopp?
Laimer can get stuck in with some solid tackles to make life difficult for the opposition at the centre of the park. He can sense the danger quickly to earn the ball back for his team and is a good dribbler with the ball as well. The Austrian midfield ace can even make some clever runs with the ball in the opponent’s half. However, he needs to add more end-product to his game. Plus, there are some concerns over his recent injury record.
Still, there is no denying that the pros outweigh the cons of signing Laimer as Liverpool are in dire need to add more quality to their midfield.
At 25, Laimer has his best years ahead of him and could be a shrewd signing for the Reds next year. We can expect him to enhance the quality of Jurgen Klopp‘s match-day squad but there are some question marks over whether he can adapt to the physical nature and high intensity of Premier League football.
With all things considered, Laimer will be a decent choice for the Merseyside club to consider this winter as he could be available on the cheap and would serve as a quick fix to Liverpool’s recent midfield problems. Another option for Klopp would be to wait until the end of this season if he wants to land him on a free transfer.
