In a recent report, Calciomercato mentioned that Liverpool are eyeing a move for PSV Eindhoven talent Cody Gakpo. It has been mentioned that the Reds will have to compete with Manchester United in pursuit of the Dutch attacker but could struggle to land him this January as PSV are unwilling to lose him in the middle of the season.
Gakpo’s Impressive Run Of Form At The Philips Stadion
The 23-year-old has been in an excellent run of form of late as he has put in several match-winning displays for PSV in the final third. Gakpo has done well to find the back of the net on nine occasions and pick up 12 assists in 14 matches for them in the Dutch Eredivisie.
The Netherlands international has been a consistent performer in the opposition half based on his average of 3.6 shots, 4.2 key passes and 1.9 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Dutch top flight. He has even distributed the ball relatively well after making 76.5% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Philips Stadion is set to expire in the summer of 2026. Thus, it will take a big fee for Liverpool to lure him away from PSV next year.
Should Liverpool Boss Jurgen Klopp Get Gakpo On Board?
Gakpo is a good dribbler with the ball and can strike the ball with power and accuracy from long range. He has even got the vision to cut open the opponent’s defence with a decisive pass on the attacking third of the field. Gakpo is primarily a left-sided wide player but can also play as a right-sided wide player or as a centre-forward if his manager tells him to do so.
The Dutch sensation is currently representing his nation in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and has already scored a goal in the tournament. At 23, he is only going to get better over the next few years which makes him a good option for Liverpool to consider in 2023.
We can expect Gakpo to add more goals and creativity to Jurgen Klopp‘s attack at Anfield. He could even form a lethal attacking partnership with Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah at the Merseyside club.
Therefore, Klopp should think about launching a big move to get Gakpo on board, especially if he continues to perform at such a high level as he could help the Reds challenge for even more major trophies over the next decade.
