Recent reports from Manchester Evening News state that Manchester United are keen on signing Barcelona forward Memphis Depay in the upcoming transfer window as Erik ten Hag looks set to add to his options in attack.
‘The Dutchman is out of contract at the end of the season, so their only chance of getting a nominal fee for him will be at the start of the year.’ – Adrian Sanchez reported.
‘With United in the market for at least one new forward next year, a reunion could be considered.’
A report from Spanish media outlet AS stated that Memphis Depay is in pole position to leave the Catalan club in January.
‘Memphis Depay’s days are numbered at FC Barcelona. As AS has been able to learn, there is a consensus in the sports area to find a way out for him this winter. The reasons that have led to this decision are several, but two weigh above all: their poor performance and the possibility of making a hole in the salary bill.’ – the translated version of the report read.
‘With all these reports on the table, the club’s sports area has decided to give the green light to his departure if an interesting offer arrives. In principle, any figure from five million would be welcome, taking into account that a good World Cup in the Netherlands could revalue it.’
Having come through the ranks at Dutch side PSV, Memphis Depay signed for Barcelona from Olympique Lyon in the summer of 2021 on a free transfer. Over the course of the last couple of years, the Netherlands international has made 178 appearances for the Spanish giants, scoring seventy-six goals and assisting fifty-five more across all competitions.
However, he has barely managed to secure game time in the ongoing season due to thigh problems.
Should ten Hag Go In For Him?
Manchester United need immediate reinforcements in the striker’s department, but a reunion with the 28-year-old striker would be nothing short of a gamble.
‘But there are more arguments against Memphis that make him be in the eye of the hurricane: the club did not like his way of managing the injury he suffered at the end of September with his team.’
‘With attitudes of this type, no matter how much the player justifies himself on social networks, the approval of the fans is not achieved. And even less, when the forward is pointed out as a player prone to night outings.’
He might still be capable of scoring goals on a regular basis; however, another negative influence in the dressing room is the last thing Erik ten Hag would want at this point.
