In a recent report from Manchester Evening News, it was mentioned that Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan’s career at the Etihad Stadium could be coming to an end as Galatasaray hope to lure him to Turkey. It is understood that the German midfielder is in the last year of his contract with the Sky Blues and the Turkish giants hope to sign him for free in the summer transfer window.
Gundogan’s Numbers With Manchester City This Season
Gundogan has had a brilliant start to his campaign this season as he is putting in some influential displays at the centre of the park. He has managed to score two goals and create two assists for the Mancunian giants so far across all fronts.
The Gelsenkirchen-born sensation has been a key player for Guardiola as he has been reliable and consistent in the holding positions of the midfield. He has been averaging 1.8 shots, 0.9 tackles and 1.9 key passes per game in the Premier League this season. He has also been tidy with his ball distribution after completing 89.7% of his attempted passes in the English first division (stats via whoscored).
Should Guardiola Sanction Gundogan’s Exit?
Ilkay Gundogan is a real hard worker as he is relentless both in offence and defence; he possesses a high work rate while maintaining his composure on the pitch. The German international can time his tackles well and make some crucial interceptions to win the ball back for his side. Furthermore, he excels at distributing the ball to his teammates and can make a few decisive passes to create chances for his attackers in front of the goal.
The 31-year-old is a seasoned veteran and remains highly experienced after playing through various European competitions throughout his career. His addition could certainly add more depth and bring more creativity to the midfield department of any club.
With less than a year left in his contract, Pep Guardiola should decide on whether to offer him an extension in order to keep him at the Etihad or cut him loose. However, if the Spanish tactician decides to sanction his exit he would have to identify a decent replacement to fill in his shoes which could deem to be a very difficult task.
