In a recent segment on Youtube, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that Manchester United remain big admirers of PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo. It is understood that the Red Devils are eyeing a move to acquire the services of the Dutch wide player next year.
Gakpo’s Brilliant Run Of Form In Dutch Football
Gakpo is having an excellent campaign in the Eredivisie as he has produced several match-winning displays for PSV in the final third. The 23-year-old has banged in 13 goals and secured 17 assists in 23 matches for the Dutch outfit this season across multiple competitions.
The Dutch sensation has given a good account of himself in the opponent’s half after he averaged 3.8 shots, 4.2 key passes and 1.9 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Dutch Eredivisie. He has even been accurate when interchanging possession with his teammates, based on his pass success rate of 77% in the top tier of Dutch football (stats via whoscored).
His current deal with the Dutch outfit is set to run out in the summer of 2026. Therefore, Man United would have to make a big offer if they are serious about recruiting him this January or at the end of this campaign.
Is Gakpo The Right Fit For Manchester United Boss Erik Ten Hag?
Gakpo is a great dribbler with the ball at his feet and has got the vision to cut open the opposition’s defence with a decisive pass in the final third. He is proficient at creating space for himself to get a few strikes in on-target and can keep the ball moving quite well in the opponent’s half.
We can expect Gakpo to add more goals and assists to Man United‘s frontline if Erik ten Hag can find a way to get him on board next year. At 23, the English talent has got his best years ahead of him and could grow into a future star at Old Trafford.
Therefore, it makes sense for the Red Devils to orchestrate a move to bring Gakpo to Manchester when the transfer window reopens in January. However, there are some concerns over whether he is good enough to make a smooth transition to life in Premier League football.
Still, Gakpo ticks all the right boxes in terms of what is required to be a success story at Old Trafford in the coming seasons. With all things considered, ten Hag should move in for him next year as he will be a decent fit for his style of play at the Theatre of Dreams.
