If a report from Sport Bild is believed to be true, Liverpool is keeping close eyes on Patrick Drewes over a potential transfer swoop. The SV Sandhausen custodian will be a free agent next summer, and the Reds are considering a shock move to bolster themselves between the sticks despite having the likes of Alisson Becker, Caoimhin Kelleher, and Adrian in their ranks.
Liverpool is apparently well-equipped in the last line of defense. But they are likely to part ways with 35-year-old Adrian once his current deal expires in June 2023. Kelleher has been excellent as the understudy to Alisson. However, his persistent fitness problems refrained him from attaining more minutes in the wake of the Brazilian’s injury absence.
Although it’s not even the midway of the 2022-23 campaign, teams across Europe are already exploring options with little club football left this year before the transfer window reopens. Fans are excited to see their favorite teams facing each other in fierce matches throughout the entire season. According to ExpressVPN’s sports streaming statistics, last season, Liverpool’s games had the highest viewership in the entire Premier League, and according to predictions, fans have a lot more to look forward to this season as well. But will the new additions to the team meet the fans’ expectations?
The Merseysiders were burnt out last season due to excessive games, and due to their aging, as well as injury-ravaged midfield, they needed some fresh legs in their lines. They missed out on Aurélien Tchouaméni who preferred a move to Real Madrid, and the other target Jude Bellingham was not allowed to leave by his current employers Borussia Dortmund. The club had no plan b, and the panic signing with Arthur (who hardly featured for them before suffering a long-term injury) exposed their financial limitations and budget constraints compared to fellow title contenders.
While it is extremely difficult to make high-profile signings during the January window, the owners must splash the cash to rope in at least one new midfielder who would stay fit and offer a high work ethic in the centre of the pitch. A goalkeeper might not be the top priority for the time being, yet the signing of the 29-year-old German on a Bosman makes absolute sense for many reasons.
Kelleher will be 24 later this month, and due to the lack of first-team minutes, we might eventually see him leaving for a regular gametime in the long run. 19-year-old Marcelo Pitaluga, currently on loan at Macclesfield FC, is rated highly at the club, but he requires successive loan stints to attune to the grind and demands of English football.
Drewes progressed through the academy ranks of VfL Wolfsburg but never featured for their senior side. He had his spells with FC Wil, Preußen Münster and Würzburger Kickers in the lower divisions of the German pyramid before joining then 2. Bundesliga side VfL Bochum back in the summer of 2019. There he made only 9 appearances over two seasons, but a change of fortune at Sandhausen has now earned him Liverpool’s attention.
Who will join Liverpool’s lines in the near future? Many options are at stake, and it is yet to be seen what Klopp’s next move will be.
