According to Football.London, Tottenham Hotspur have been reportedly told that they should look for a decent replacement for Hugo Lloris as his contract expires in the summer of 2024. According to the report, former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor said that the Lilywhites should look at Jordan Pickford of Everton for Lloris’ successor in the near future.
Lloris’ Impressive Numbers For Tottenham Hotspur So Far
The Spurs’ leader has been a key player between the sticks for his side. He has been reliable and consistent at the back as he has made 346 appearances for Tottenham since 2014, during which he has earned 124 clean sheets in total.
The Nice-born sensation has made ten appearances for Antonio Conte’s side in the Premier League this season, keeping three clean sheets. He has guided his team into the top three while keeping the best defensive record in the English first division so far.
The French shot-stopper has also been tidy with his ball distribution after completing 78.7% of his attempted passes in the English top flight (stats via whoscored).
Should Conte Bring In Pickford To Replace Lloris?
Lloris is agile and excels at handling the ball. The France international remains cautious during crosses but has the reaction time to eliminate any imposing danger. Furthermore, he has the ability to distribute the ball to his teammates even under pressure.
Goalkeepers are known to enjoy their careers well in their late thirties and Lloris certainly seems to be doing just that as he leads his men. However, despite putting in influential displays in the goal and making some impressive saves, the Frenchman has been subjected to criticism with Agbonlahor speculating if he’s the best fit for Tottenham in the near future.
Pickford could be a decent replacement for Lloris as the Everton shot-stopper has been sensational at the back for the Toffees. But the England international lacks experience and that is where Lloris is beneficial for Spurs as they look to get through the European contests.
Even though Conte might get better replacements for the French goalkeeper he should be circumspect in taking that decision as there is no better leader for the North London club than Hugo Lloris as of now.
