West Ham United Urged To Rethink Attacking Strategies: What Should Be Moyes’ Play Here?

In a recent report from Football.London, it was mentioned that West Ham United have been urged to rethink their attacking strategies looking at a dismal start to the campaign. The Hammers have only found the back of the net on three occasions in seven league games so far. This makes it prevalent that they’re struggling in front of the goal and David Moyes will need to do something about it if they wish to get out of the relegation zone.

Verdict From Kevin Campbell On West Ham United

David Moyes will have to deploy Michail Antonio in another position once Gianluca Scamacca makes his mark in the English first division. This was Campbell’s verdict when he urged the Hammers to find a way to make use of both Antonio and Scamacca in the attacking third.

The former Premier League striker stressed the fact that the West Ham boss was only allowing the ex-Sassuolo striker to adapt to English football and get used to West Ham’s playstyle until Moyes decides to make use of him.

“There was always talk of Michail Antonio needing somebody to come in when he’s either gone off the boil or he needs to play another position.”

“Until that moment I think it’s probably a case of getting Scamacca used to the West Ham way and what David Moyes wants. How Can Moyes Create More Goal Threats?

The West Ham boss could make a couple of changes in the final third allowing Antonio and Scamacca to form a two-man strike team up front in a 4-4-2 formation. The wide areas could be occupied by Jarrod Bowen and Maxwell Cornet while Lucas Paqeuta plays as a box-to-box midfielder accompanying Declan Rice in the central areas.

However, another alternative could be to utilise the 3-4-1-2 formation with Scamacca and Antonio up top while Paqueta plays behind the strikers as an attacking midfielder allowing Emerson Palmieri and Vladimir Coufal to cover the flanks. This would mean that Paqeuta could find some decisive passes to set the strikers in front of the goal. It would be ideal for the wing-backs to get forward and create opportunities by delivering crosses inside the penalty box. This could certainly create more chances in front of the goal but the three-man defence could invite a lot of pressure from the opposition.

David Moyes will need to strategise on how to make use of the players at his disposal to opt for a formation where he can utilise the attackers and ease out the pressure on the backline.
