The 2022 FIFA World Cup is set to begin in Qatar on November 20 as 32 top countries in world football look to get the better of each other in the hopes of being announced as the best team in the world.
The World Cup will be held in the Middle East for the first time in the competition’s rich history due to FIFA’s pledge to help stage at least one major international tournament in that region before the end of this decade.
This will also be the first time that a World Cup tournament is being held during the winter months in the Northern Hemisphere, with the competition set to kick off on November 20 and end on December 18, with the final taking place at the Lusail Stadium.
How Did Qatar Win The World Cup Bid?
Qatar won its World Cup bid due to FIFA’s desire to host the famous tournament in the Middle East before 2030. The country’s selection was initially met with a lot of concerns because of its impact on club football seasons but FIFA decided to stick with its decision of selecting Qatar as the 2022 World Cup host.
Why Did Fifa Shift The World Cup From Summers To Winters?
FIFA was forced to shift the 2022 World Cup from the Northern Hemisphere’s summer months to the winter months because of the soaring summer temperatures in the Middle East nation.
After some research, the football governing body decided that it was simply not viable to host the World Cup between the traditional June-July spots.
Qatar has also acted on the matter by fitting each World Cup venue with a “focused cooling” air-conditioning system so that they can fight against the heat and humidity in the region.
