Rangers were supposed to show a reaction this afternoon following their weekend humiliation against Celtic. But the misery continues for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men who surrendered in Amsterdam after yet another disastrous performance. Ajax maintained sheer supremacy en route to clinching an emphatic 4-0 win to kickstart their Champions League campaign.
Below are the Rangers players rated in another 4-0 defeat against Ajax.
Jon McLaughlin: 6
The scoreline would have been far worse had he not made some diving saves during the match. A better performance from the Scotsman, particularly after his calamitous mistakes in the Old Firm clash.
James Tavernier: 5
Had high hopes from the skipper given his ability to run the show with relentless runs and attacking build-ups. However, he looked clueless down the right both in defence and attack and the manager took him off at half-time which could be a strategic call. Leon King replaced him in the defensive third.
Connor Goldson: 5
Another poor zonal marking from the players, Goldson in particular, who must accept the blame for Edson Alvarez’s opener. Never looked settled in deep defence. Was unable to play it out from the back against an aggressive Ajax attack.
James Sands: 5
Should have tested Pasveer in the hosts’ goal with his header attempt. Looked out of depth in the heart of the backline alongside Goldson.
Borna Barisic: 6
Must be feeling unfortunate as his goal got ruled out via VAR. Showed some intent down the left with his overlapping runs, crosses and link-up play.
John Lundstram: 5
Made some recoveries but kept on losing duels and getting dribbled past far too frequently. Was completely outplayed by the Ajax midfield.
Glen Kamara: 5.5
Lacked the pace while moving the ball across the pitch. Could not control the tempo and was eventually taken off for Steven Davis late in the game.
Scott Wright: 5
Remained isolated down the right as he only had a few trivial touches and passes in a dreadful first half. The gaffer replaced him with Rabbi Matondo during the break.
Malik Tillman: 6
Had a couple of successful dribbling attempts, but the young ‘number 10’ failed to create anything noteworthy for Colak before making way for Ryan Jack at half-time.
Ryan Kent: 6
Drew fouls down the left due to his swift footwork and flashy skills. But the Ajax right-back Devyne Rensch did well overall against the English winger.
Antonio Colak: 5.5
Had the least touches of any outfield player to play 90 minutes. His solitary effort was blocked by the Ajax defence. The lack of creativity in midfield refrained him from causing problems in the opponents’ defence.
Rangers Subs vs Ajax
Leon King: 6.5
A strong outing from the teenager who showed more grit and determination than Tavernier.
Ryan Jack: 5
Made a costly error that led to Ajax’s fourth with 10 minutes remaining of the normal time.
Rabbi Matondo: 5.5
Made little impact as he kept on losing duels down the right-hand flank.
Steven Davis: 6.5
Did well in limited minutes, unlike his fellow midfielders.
