In a recent report, Fanatik mentioned that Everton winger Andros Townsend is gathering interest from Turkey with Trabzonspor eyeing a move for him this month. It is understood that the English talent wants to part ways with the Toffees amid interest from the Turkish club.
Townsend’s Up And Down Season At Merseyside
Townsend had a tough season at Goodison Park recently as he struggled to be consistent for Everton on the attacking end of the field. The 31-year-old banged in seven goals and secured four assists in 27 matches for the Toffees in the previous campaign in all competitions.
The English playmaker deserves a little bit of credit for averaging 1.5 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, 1.0 shots, 1.5 key passes and 1.2 dribbles per game in the Premier League. He was even tidy when interchanging possession with his teammates in the opponent’s half, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 78.1% in the English top-flight (stats via whoscored).
Townsend is under contract at the Merseyside club until the end of this campaign. Thus, it makes sense for Lampard to cut his loose as soon as possible so that he can re-invest the money generated from his sale to strengthen other areas of his squad.
Should Chelsea Boss Frank Lampard Cut Townsend Loose?
Townsend has still got decent pace under his belt and can make a few decent runs with the ball out on the flanks. He is usually quite direct with his runs and can engineer some inviting chances for his teammates in the final third. The English talent can even strike the ball with power from long range. He is primarily a right-sided wide player but can even play in the number ten position as an attacking midfielder or a left-sided winger if his manager tells him to do so.
However, at 31, Townsend is about to enter the twilight years of his playing career. With the recent emergence of Anthony Gordon at Goodison Park, he is currently surplus to requirements at the Merseyside club. If Townsend stays, it is unlikely that he would get regular game time this season.
Thus, it is only logical for Everton boss Frank Lampard to cut him loose by sanctioning his departure to Trabzonspor this month. Townsend can definitely benefit from switching clubs in search of more game time in the coming seasons. All in all, the Toffees should also think about moving him on and getting his name off their wage bill.
