In a recent report from BBC, it was mentioned that West Ham United have sanctioned the exit of Issa Diop to Fulham. It is understood that the Hammers have agreed on a transfer fee of £15 million for the centre-back as he awaits his medical.
Diop’s Campaign For West Ham United Last Season
Diop made his mark providing cover for the centre-back position as he produced some influential displays under David Moyes. He managed to score a goal and create an assist over 23 appearances across multiple competitions.
The French defender made the most out of his appearances after averaging 0.8 tackles, 0.5 interceptions and 3.2 clearances per game in the Premier League. He was also tidy with his ball distribution after completing 85.1 % of his attempted passes in the English top flight (stats via whoscored).
Good Move From The West Ham Boss Sanctioning His Exit?
Issa Diop is a decent tackler of the ball; he remains aware of the danger coming his way and does well to clear his lines. Standing at 1.94 meters, his tall frame helps him dominate his opponents in the air. Furthermore, he can also make a few interceptions to win the ball back for his side.
The 25-year-old can get better over the coming seasons and he needs regular playtime to grow further, but that seemed unlikely at the East London club as they are well stocked in the defensive department. With Nayef Aguerd as a new signing and the likes of Craig Dawson, Angelo Ogbonna, and Kurt Zouma already competing in the Hammers’ centre-half positions, there is no room for Issa Diop to feature as a regular.
A move away from London Stadium would be beneficial for Diop as Fulham have done well to earn their promotion to the English first division, so the Toulouse-born talent would look to add more bite and steel to their defence.
