In a recent report, Manchester Evening News has stated that Manchester City are in talks to sign Sergio Gomez from Anderlecht. It is understood that he caught Pep Guardiola’s eye after performing impressively under Vincent Kompany. With the Marc Cucurella transfer saga slipping out of the Sky Blues‘ control, it is wise of them to look elsewhere.
Gomez’s Impressive Campaign At Anderlecht Last Season
Sergio Gomez had a solid campaign as he produced some impressive displays in the defensive third of the pitch. He managed to score six goals and create 11 assists over 39 appearances last season.
The Badalona-born talent has performed consistently based on his averages of 1.5 tackles, 1.3 interceptions, 0.9 clearances, 1.2 shots, 1.7 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per game in the Belgian First Division. He was also tidy with his ball distribution after completing 83.2% of his attempted passes in the Belgian top flight (stats via whoscored).
Should Guardiola Bring Him To Manchester City?
Gomez is a decent tackler of the ball; he does well to cover the passing lanes and make some clever interceptions to win the ball back for his side. However, he has a solid presence on the offensive end as he excels at delivering crosses from wide areas to create meaningful opportunities for his teammates. The Spanish defender excels at holding on to the ball and can make some dangerous runs down the left flank when he’s on the front foot.
The 21-year-old can distribute the ball efficiently to his teammates. He could do well under Pep Guardiola and become even better over the coming seasons. The Spanish left-back could provide cover for Joao Cancelo.
He is definitely a huge gamble compared to Cucurella, who has already settled into the Premier League, but Man City have to look at their options since they are in dire need of a left-back this off-season.
