In a recent report, ESPN offered an update on the future of Barcelona full-back Sergino Dest this summer. It has been mentioned that the Catalan club are willing to entertain offers for the United States defender in this off-season.
Dest’s Impressive Form At The Nou Camp Last Season
The 21-year-old had a solid campaign with Barca recently as he managed to serve as a decent member of Xavi’s match-day squad. The Almere-born talent participated in 31 matches for the Catalan outfit last season, picking up three assists across all fronts.
Dest deserves some credit for averaging 1.5 tackles, 0.8 clearances, 0.9 key passes and 1.8 dribbles per game in La Liga. He was even accurate when distributing the ball after making 92.4% of his attempted passes in the top tier of Spanish football (stats via whoscored).
Should Barcelona Boss Xavi Cut Dest Loose This Summer?
Dest is an excellent dribbler with the ball and can set up a few promising chances for his teammates in the final third. He is a good tackler of the ball and doesn’t hesitate to put his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the offensive.
The United States sensation is a tidy passer of the ball as well. Furthermore, he is versatile enough to play in multiple positions across the pitch. Dest can operate in both full-back positions or as a wing-back or even as a winger on either flank if needed.
At 21, the best is yet to come from the Barca full-back as long as he continues to improve with each season. Xavi has currently got both Oscar Mingueza and Sergi Roberto who can fill in at right-back. However, the Barcelona head coach needs to bring in a new right-back before letting Dest leave if he wants to have a strong squad heading into the new campaign.
Dest’s current contract at the Nou Camp is set to expire in the summer of 2025. Therefore, the Catalan giants are under no pressure to cash in on him during this summer transfer window. Still, Xavi should consider cutting Dest loose as his departure will lower Barca’s wage bill for other incoming transfers in the future.
