In a recent interview with This is Futbol, Dean Jones has tipped Aston Villa striker Danny Ings to stay at Villa Park beyond this summer. Ings said,
“It was considered a good signing for them when they got him (Ings) through the door, and we know what he’s capable of.
“If he can hit his best form, I think he could be a really good fit for that Aston Villa frontline.
“Undoubtedly, there is still a chance that other teams make an offer for him, but I think I’d be edging towards Ings staying at this point.”
Ings’ Form At Villa Park Last Season
Ings had a decent campaign with the Villans as he produced a run of productive displays as the focal point of Aston Villa’s attack. He has formed a decent partnership with Ollie Watkins and did well to score seven goals and earn six assists for the West Midlands club last season in all competitions.
The 30-year-old could only manage to average 1.6 shots and 0.5 key passes per game in the Premier League. He was also a bit untidy with his ball distribution after making just 69.3% of his attempted passes in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
What Should Aston Villa Boss Steven Gerrard Do With Regards To Ings?
Ings is a good finisher in front of the opposition goal as he has got the knack for finding space and making some clever turns in the attacking third of the pitch. He can even set up a few decent chances for his teammates in the opponent’s half.
However, the English striker has sometimes struggled to be consistent with his overall contributions in the final third. Furthermore, he needs to work on improving his link-up play up top.
Ings has still got two years left to run in his Aston Villa contract. Therefore, the Villans‘ boss Steven Gerrard should think about retaining his services for at least another season as he remains an important member of his squad. The former Liverpool talent has got enough experience to help the West Midlands club push for a top-half finish in the upcoming Premier League campaign.
