In a recent report, Sport offered an update on the future of Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso. It is believed that the Blues have decided to block negotiations with Barcelona over a potential transfer involving the Spanish defender as they have been angered by the Catalan’s club pursuit of Sevilla centre-back Jules Kounde, who is also wanted at Stamford Bridge.
Alonso’s Impressive Season In English Football
Alonso had a decent campaign with the West London outfit as he managed to play an influential role in Thomas Tuchel’s match-day squad. The Spaniard made 46 appearances for Chelsea last season, netting five goals and grabbing six assists across all fronts.
The 31-year-old was a consistent performer down the left flank based on his average of 1.5 tackles, 1.5 interceptions, 1.8 clearances, 1.5 shots, 1.5 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per game in the Premier League. He even took care of the ball well when distributing possession in the opponent’s half, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 81.1% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
What Should Be Chelsea Boss Thomas Tuchel’s Play With Regards To Alonso?
Alonso is a solid tackler of the ball and can earn the ball back for his team on the defensive end of the field. He usually clears the danger when needed and can make a few decent runs with the ball down the left wing.
The Spanish sensation is a good crosser of the ball as well and can also contribute by scoring and creating his fair share of goals in the final third. He can even keep possession moving well in the opponent’s half.
Alonso has currently got a year left to run in his Chelsea contract. Therefore, Thomas Tuchel would be wise to cash in on him this summer rather than risk losing him as a free agent next year.
With Barcelona looking to beat the Blues in the race to sign Kounde from Sevilla, the West London club has every reason to be reluctant about selling their reliable left-back to the Catalan club. At this stage, Chelsea are better off keeping hold of the Spain international for another season before letting him leave on a free transfer next year.
