In a recent report, The Daily Mail mentioned that Newcastle United are monitoring Bordeaux forward Sekou Mara this summer. It has been revealed that the Magpies are keeping tabs on the progress of the French striker.
Mara’s Impressive Rise In French Football Last Season
Mara played a bit-part role in France last season when he produced some eye-catching displays as the spearhead of Bordeaux’s attack. The 19-year-old scored six goals and secured two assists in 27 matches for the French club in the previous campaign across various competitions.
The Paris-born talent saw most of his game time come off the bench which explains why he only averaged 1.5 shots, 0.3 key passes and 0.4 dribbles per game in Ligue 1. He also needs to take care of the ball a bit better when linking up play in the attacking third of the pitch after completing 67.9% of his attempted passes in the French top tier (stats via whoscored).
Should Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Move In For Mara This Summer?
Mara is proficient at creating space for himself to get a few shots in at goal. He can be a decent finisher in front of the opponent’s goal when he is playing well on the field. Mara is primarily a centre-forward but can also serve as a left-sided wide player if needed.
However, the French frontman needs to work on improving his link-up play up top. Furthermore, he is still quite inexperienced at the highest level and would take time to settle into life in Premier League football if Newcastle decide to sign him this summer.
At 19, Mara has the potential to become a top goal-getter someday. Hence, it is only logical for the Magpies to move in for him so that they can bolster their attack for the future.
Mara has the ceiling to become a success story at St. James’ Park in the long run as long as he continues to improve his overall game with each season. Therefore, Eddie Howe should launch a move for the French youngster if he is willing to be patient with his progress in the coming seasons.
