In a recent report, The Telegraph (subscription required) mentioned that Newcastle United have identified Real Sociedad forward Alexander Isak as a top target for this summer transfer window. It has been claimed that the Magpies are eyeing a move to secure the services of the Swedish striker in this off-season.
Isak’s Impressive Form At Sociedad Last Season
The 22-year-old scored ten times and earned three assists in 39 matches for the Spanish club last season across all fronts. He was far from a prolific forward but still managed to put in some influential performances as the focal point of Sociedad’s frontline.
Isak gave a good account of himself in the final third by averaging 2.3 shots, 0.6 key passes and 1.4 dribbles per game in La Liga. However, he was a bit inaccurate with his ball distribution after making 74.3% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
Is Isak A Good Fit For Newcastle United Head Coach Eddie Howe?
Isak can create some space for himself to get a few shots in at goal and can be a decent finisher in the final third when he is playing at the top of his game. He is primarily a centre-forward but can even fill in as a winger if needed.
The Swedish striker can even create a few inviting chances for others around him and is proficient at timing his runs well in behind the opponent’s backline.
Someone of Isak’s quality will be a good fit for Newcastle boss Eddie Howe‘s brand of football at St. James’ Park. We can expect him to add more firepower to the Magpies‘ attack and could serve as an upgrade over Chris Wood who has failed to impress during his time at the Tyneside club.
Isak is good enough to help Newcastle push for a European spot in the Premier League next season. However, there are some question marks over whether he is well-equipped to adapt to the physicality and high intensity of English football if the Magpies manage to bring him on board ahead of the new season.
