In a recent report, The Daily Mail stated that Aston Villa are facing competition from Leeds United for Sonny Perkins. It is understood that the Villans will now have to rival the Whites in pursuit of the former West Ham United talent.
Perkins’ Impressive Rise In England
Perkins caught the eye for the Hammers’ Under-23 side in the previous campaign but failed to break into David Moyes’ starting XI.
To his credit, the 18-year-old managed to produce a few productive performances for West Ham’s U-23 team last season as he scored ten times and grabbed one assist in 20 appearances for them across all competitions.
Therefore, it makes sense for Aston Villa to try and sign the young English striker on a free transfer after he was released by the Hammers earlier this summer.
Aston Villa To Rival Leeds United For Perkins: Is He Worth The Fight?
Perkins can be a decent finisher in the final third when he is playing with confidence on the field. He has a knack for scoring some important goals for his team and can even set up a few inviting opportunities for others around him in the opponent’s half. Perkins is primarily a striker but can even fill in as a left-sided wide player if his manager instructs him to do so.
However, the English centre-forward is still quite raw and would need time before he is ready to feature in top-flight football. Still, there is no denying that Perkins will be a good signing for the Villans in the long run if Steven Gerrard can find a way to win the race for his services in this off-season.
At 18, Perkins has the potential to become a top goal-scorer in the Premier League someday. Thus, he is well worth the fight, so the West Midlands club should try everything they can to lure the gifted youngster to Villa Park on a free transfer before the end of this summer transfer window.
Gerrard could be the ideal man to oversee his development and nurture him into a prolific frontman in the coming seasons.
