In a recent report, Football.london stated that Tottenham Hotspur have agreed on a fee for Steven Bergwijn with the player’s growing struggle for playtime. It is understood that Ajax have offered a transfer fee worth £27.8m amid Everton showing keen interest, which is a decent price for the Dutch winger who looks set to exit the North London club.
Bergwijn’s Struggling Campaign For Tottenham Hotspur
Bergwijn arrived at the North London club from PSV in 2020 to provide cover in the left-wing area. Since then the forward has produced a few influential displays on the attacking end of the field. Despite the lack of game-time last season, he has managed to score four goals and produce one assist in 29 matches, featuring for the full 90 minutes in only two games.
The Amsterdam-born sensation fell down the pecking order to mostly provide cover as a late substitute which explains why he only averaged 0.8 shots, 0.3 key passes and 0.4 dribbles per game in the Premier League. However, he has been impressive with his ball distribution, completing 84.2% of his attempted passes in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
Should Conte Let Him Exit Tottenham Hotspur?
Antonio Conte has been busy in the summer transfer window signing 4 key players for the Lilywhites with the fifth signing underway. He is set to revamp the squad ahead of the next season to come out stronger in the European competition and make a run for lifting the Premier League crown.
The Italian tactician has brought in attacking reinforcements in the form of Richarlison and can rely on his solid frontline including Dejan Kulusevski, Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min who will be featuring regularly in his starting XI.
Steven Bergwijn’s position remains threatened in the next campaign and Conte clearly does not have any plan to utilise him. So a move to Ajax, who are also Champion League contenders, could rejuvenate his career and he would look to create an impact for them in their attacking department.
