In a recent report, the Athletic offered an update on the future of Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher this summer. It has been revealed that the Reds want to keep hold of the Republic of Ireland international beyond this summer transfer window.
Kelleher’s Impressive Form In Merseyside
Kelleher had a terrific campaign at Anfield last season but often found himself behind Alisson Becker in Jurgen Klopp’s pecking order. The 23-year-old was involved in eight senior matches for the Reds in the previous campaign, securing four clean sheets and conceding seven goals in all competitions.
His good contributions helped the Reds win the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup last season. However, he struggled to get any real game time in Premier League football over the past 11 months.
Still, Kelleher did well to average 1.0 clearances and 2.0 long balls per game in the Carabao Cup. He even distributed the ball relatively well after making 75% of his attempted passes in that competition (stats via whoscored).
Should Liverpool Boss Jurgen Klopp Keep Kelleher For The Long Run?
Kelleher has got decent reflexes that help him make a few impressive saves at the back. He doesn’t hesitate to come out of his lines to clear the danger when needed.
The eight-time Republic of Ireland international is also a decent handler of the ball and can spread the ball well from the back. Standing at 1.88m, Kelleher is a towering presence inside his penalty area. However, the Irish sensation needs to continue working hard towards improving himself in the coming seasons if he wants to become a regular starter at the highest level.
At 23, Kelleher has got his best years ahead of him which is why Liverpool should look to keep him at Anfield for the long run. Jurgen Klopp is the ideal person to nurture him over the next few years and turn him into a future starter at the Merseyside club.
Kelleher has the potential to succeed Alisson Becker as Liverpool’s number-one keeper someday. Hence, the Reds should consider keeping hold of him beyond this summer as he could be a great asset for them for the long term.
