In a recent report, Calciomercato stated that Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz is gathering interest from AC Milan. It has been mentioned that the Villans’ midfield ace is on the radar of the Milan giants this summer.
Luiz’s Solid Season In English Football
Luiz had a decent campaign at Villa Park as he was responsible for producing a run of solid displays for the West Midlands club at the centre of the park. The 24-year-old was involved in 35 matches for the Villans last season, netting twice and grabbing three assists in all competitions.
The nine-time Brazil international managed to impress by averaging 1.7 tackles, 1.0 interceptions, 0.6 clearances, 0.7 shots, 1.1 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per game in the Premier League. He was even accurate when distributing possession from midfield after he completed 86.8% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Should Aston Villa Boss Steven Gerrard Cash In Luiz This Summer?
Luiz is a solid tackler of the ball and can make a few timely interceptions for his team at the centre of the park. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when needed and can have a positive influence as well going forward.
The Brazilian sensation is an accurate passer of the ball but needs to find a way to be more consistent at times with his performances in the Premier League.
At 24, Luiz will only get better when he enters his prime in the coming seasons. However, he has just got a year left to run in his Aston Villa contract which is why the Villans should consider selling him this summer. It makes sense for Steven Gerrard to cash in on the South American talent now rather than risk losing him as a free agent at the end of next season.
The West Midlands club can definitely benefit from upgrading their midfield if they want to push for a top-half finish in the Premier League over the next few years. Therefore, Gerrard should use the fee generated from his potential sale to bring in a suitable replacement before the end of this transfer window.
