Onana’s Decent Rise In French Football
Onana was a prominent member of Lille’s match-day squad and managed to put in some eye-catching displays in the previous campaign. The Belgian talent was involved in 41 matches for the French club last season, scoring three times and grabbing one assist in multiple competitions.
The 20-year-old made most of his appearances off the bench which explains why he only averaged 1.5 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 0.6 clearances, 0.5 shots and 0.5 key passes per 90 minutes in Ligue 1. He was even excellent when distributing the ball from midfield based on his pass completion rate of 83.3% in the French top-flight (stats via whoscored).
What Wil Onana Add To Arsenal Head Coach Mikel Arteta’s Side?
Onana can get stuck in with some solid tackles to make life tough for the opposition at the centre of the park. He can make a few timely interceptions in midfield and can offer decent protection for his teammates at the back.
The Belgian youngster has done well to add a few goals to his game but needs to be more consistent with his contributions in the opposition half. He is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also fill in as a box-to-box midfielder or act as a centre-back if needed.
At 20, Onana has got the potential to become a top player in his position someday. Hence, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta should focus on getting him on board as he will be a decent signing for them in the long run.
We can expect Onana to add some depth to Arteta’s squad and could help the North London outfit challenge across all fronts in the coming seasons. However, only time will tell whether he can cope with the physical nature and high intensity of English football if Arsenal end up bringing him to the Emirates Stadium ahead of the new campaign.
