In a recent interview with Give Me Sport, Pete O’Rourke tipped Aston Villa to be a good destination for AC Milan talent Alessio Romagnoli. O’Rourke said,
“I think Aston Villa are an attractive option to play for right now. You’ve seen the success they’ve had in luring Philippe Coutinho to the Premier League, obviously, they are among the biggest spenders now in the Premier League as well.
“The owners are backing Steven Gerrard in the transfer market with finances. Diego Carlos was also a big signing from Sevilla, so I think Aston Villa right now are an ambitious club seemingly going places. So, I’m sure that will be attractive to a lot of players, including Romagnoli.”
Romagnoli’s Impressive Season At San Siro
Romagnoli had a fruitful campaign in AC Milan as he helped them secure the Serie A earlier this summer. The Italy international registered one goal and one assist in 26 matches for his current employers last season across all competitions.
The 27-year-old was a dominant presence defensively inside his half after he averaged 1.3 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and 2.5 clearances per game in Serie A. He was even excellent when distributing the ball from the back as he made 88.8% of his attempted passes in the Italian first division (stats via whoscored).
Is Romagnoli A Good Fit For Aston Villa?
Romagnoli can be a solid presence on the defensive end of the pitch as he usually times his tackles well to earn the ball back for his team. He doesn’t hesitate to clear the danger when the opposition are on the front foot.
The 12-time Italy international excels at playing his way out from the back and can use his strong 1.85m frame to dominate the opposition in the air.
Romagnoli will be an excellent fit for Steven Gerrard‘s style of play at Villa Park. He would add more quality to Aston Villa‘s defence and could help them push for a European spot in the Premier League next season.
The Italian sensation could go on to form a solid defensive partnership with Diego Carlo at the West Midlands club. Therefore, Gerrard should focus on getting a deal done for Romagnoli before the end of this transfer window.
