In a recent report, The Sun revealed that Chelsea are leading the race to sign Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo this summer. It is believed that the Blues have moved ahead of the queue in the race to land the Portuguese striker who wants to part ways with the Red Devils in this off-season.
Ronaldo’s Impressive Form In Manchester
Ronaldo had a productive campaign at Old Trafford last season despite failing to help his team pick up a positive run of results in the Premier League. The 37-year-old banged in 24 goals and secured three assists in 38 matches for the Red Devils in the previous campaign across all fronts.
The Portugal international led the line well by averaging 3.7 shots, 0.9 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per 90 minutes in Premier League football. He was even tidy with his link-up play in the final third after he completed 81.9% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Is Ronaldo A Good Option For Chelsea?
Ronaldo can still be a world-class footballer when he is playing well on the field. He can lead the line well on his own and remains a deadly finisher in front of the opposition goal. The Portuguese superstar has even got the vision to unlock the opponent’s defence with a decisive pass in the final third. However, he has lost a lot of pace from his game and has been guilty of having a low work rate off the ball over the past few years.
Still, someone of Ronaldo’s quality and proven track record will be a decent option for the Blues to consider for the short run. He will no doubt add more goals to Thomas Tuchel‘s attack and would serve as an upgrade over Romelu Lukaku who struggled to give a good account of himself at Stamford Bridge last season.
At 37, Ronaldo might still have a couple of good years left in him and could help Chelsea challenge for the UEFA Champions League trophy next season. Thus, the West London club should think about engineering a move to secure his signature during this summer transfer period.
