Despite seeing a glimmer of hope in the points table before Christmas following some good form, all is not well off the field for the Black Cats. They are experiencing immense financial crisis currently, with the club CEO Martin Bain recently revealing that any spending during the January transfer window will be “very, very limited”.
The injury crisis that the Black Cats have gone through in the initial stages of the season demands immediate reinforcements at the Stadium of Light. To make matters worse, Sunderland boss David Moyes hasn’t taken the situation very nicely either.
He has histrionically criticised the administrative the board stating that he may have not even taken the job over the summer had he been made fully aware of the club’s financial situation. He has further revealed that the club is not even in a position to make loan signings next month.
While ending the crisis anytime soon seems like an uphill task for Sunderland, one might well be surprised to know the players Sunderland could get for free. Here are 3 free signings Moyes could make that would successfully help in the team’s revival in the second-half of the season.
Emanuel Adebayor
The Togo international was left by Crystal Palace last summer and at 32 years of age, it is needless to point out how much of game is still left in the player. He has played in some of the best clubs across Europe, which include the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur and AS Monaco.
He has 97 goals and 47 assists in the English Premier League in 242 appearances. His brimming experience of the league will definitely help Sunderland in their battle to survive the drop. Adebayor could be the ideal partner for Defoe.
Raul Meireles
Yet another experienced player at the highest level. The Portuguese international became a free agent last summer after Fenerbahce let him go. Meireles has good experience of playing in the Premier League after plying his trade for big clubs like Liverpool and Chelsea and will definitely a top player for Sunderland at any given day. A player of his stature playing beside Kirchhoff will give a decent stability to Sunderland’s midfield.
Joleon Lescott
An old veteran of EPL, Lescott could be a good backup for Sunderland’s faltering defence. Moyes was considering buying Arsenal’s Carl Jenkinson a few weeks but the Arsenal man hasn’t shown any sort of consistency or quality to that’s make the Black Cats into a better defensive unit.
Lescott isn’t the player who can play every week now, but his presence on the bench will provide the team with some assurance.
