Arsenal’s struggles find no escape as last weekend saw them going down at Etihad Stadium after leading early in the game. Their playmaker, Mesut Ozil, was hugely criticised for his lethargic display in recent matches and talks are doing the round that the German might not have a contract extension after all.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is under pressure to secure a long-term contract for their star striker Alexis Sanchez, whose contract ends after eighteen months. Rumours are ripe that the Chilean will stay at Emirates if the boss brings in quality players up front.
And as per reports, Arsenal might just have found the perfect player to meet that need in Borussia Dortmund striker Marco Reus. More than appeasing Sanchez, it will be about appeasing their fans.
Arsenal have already entered the festive period on a poor note as the team went from Second sto the fourth in a span of one week after losing back to back games to Everton and Manchester City. The players looked highly dispirited after their loss last weekend and the fans’ post-match rants concerning Wenger and the players have flooded the internet.
There is extreme frustration in the air at Emirates and Reus could be a perfect answer to clear it. Of course, he won’t come easy for Arsenal and a big-money contract is on the cards. If Ozil leaves, his fellow German could be an ideal replacement in the number 10 position. Reus seems to be pretty similar to Ozil. Although he might not have the same level of quality in terms of his passing, his elusiveness and pace will more than makeup for it
Operative anywhere in the attacking third, the 27-year-old attacking midfielder has his contract at Dortmund till 2019 and has been rejecting offers from numerous top clubs for long. However, Daily Telegraph claims that Arsenal just might be able to lure him this time.
After injuries shortened his early Hinrunde Bundesliga campaign this season, Reus came with a bang in Dortmund’s Champions League fixture and already has four goals and four assists in four appearances in all competition for his club.
He has an average passing accuracy of 74% and a shot accuracy of 50%. The only concerns with Reus will be that he is tremendously injury prone. Having such a crucial player absent for a major chunk of the season will be a huge disappointment, as Arsenal are already experiencing that with Cazorla and have a really bad luck with injuries in the last few seasons.
But, if Arsenal are a really changed team as many have stated this season and have finally moved on from a mediocre team to title contenders, buying Reus will be a perfect way to make a statement.
