With the gameweek nearing its end with just the Merseyside Derby left to complete the proceedings, we have decided to take a look at the top 3 defenders so far this weekend. Unlike the last few weeks, we have seen 5 cleans sheets already from the 9 matches played so far. And we have seen impressive performances from a couple of defenders at both ends of the pitch. So while we prepare ourselves for a surprise Everton might have up their sleeves for tonight’s fixture, let us spare a moment for the defenders who have earned themselves a couple of days of well-earned rest.
PATRICK VAN AANHOLT (SUNDERLAND)
Sunderland have had Jordan Pickford and Jermain Defoe to thank for whatever positive aspects they have displayed this season. His saves and the latter’s goals have kept their points tally and subsequently their standing better what it could have been right now. But another name which has forced itself into our thinking is the marauding left-back Patrick Van Aanholt. He has been always known more for his attacking abilities than his defensive contributions and while for a period, it looked that David Moyes was not in a position to afford the luxury of an out and out attacking left-back, the player kept at it and is their joint 2nd highest scorer now. His all-round display against Watford, where he contributed to the clean sheet and also scored the winner has made him the best defender of the weekend.
DANNY ROSE (TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR)
The Englishman has been phenomenal this season. He has transformed as a player and has built on his impressive displays of last season. After bursting onto the scene, a period of lull had made critics write him off but he has turned things around admirably.
He has been fast. He has been strong. And he has been full of intent and has put in the hours in practice and has improved his ball control and his dribbling and his crossing abilities. Indispensable for Tottenham and England, the player scored a goal and helped his side to a clean sheet to find his way into our Top 3.
RYAN BERTRAND (SOUTHAMPTON)
Southampton have been mightily impressive this season, especially defensively. And while Jose Fonte and Virgil Van Dijk have been soaking in the plaudits deservedly, Bertrand has been quietly efficient and is slowly coming into his own. He was the other goal scorer apart from Jay Rodriguez in a comfortable 3-1 win over a Bournemouth side who have been impressive this season. He would like to carry on the form and play a bigger role in the remainder of the campaign.
