In a recent report, Fichajes claimed that Aston Villa are eyeing a move for Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez. It has been mentioned that the Villans boss Steven Gerrard wants to bring his former Liverpool teammate to Villa Park this summer.
Suarez’s Campaign Of Mixed Emotions In Spanish Football
The 35-year-old is having an up and down season at the Wanda Metropolitano as he has struggled to be consistent with his performances over the past ten months. Suarez has done well to score 13 goals and secure three assists in 44 matches for the Madrid giants during this campaign across various competitions.
The Salto-born sensation has struggled to be productive at times in the final third based on his average of 1.6 shots, 0.4 key passes and 0.2 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has also been a bit wasteful with his link-up play, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 73.7% in the Spanish first division (stats via whoscored).
What Will Suarez Add To Aston Villa Boss Steven Gerrard’s Side?
Suarez has got a wealth of experience under his belt and remains a good finisher in front of the opposition goal. He can still make some clever runs towards the opponent’s box and can chip in by creating the odd goal. Suarez is primarily a central striker but can still fill in as a hard-working wide player if required.
However, at 35, there is no denying that the Uruguay international is a player on the decline. Still, someone of Suarez’s experience would undoubtedly enhance the overall depth of Steven Gerrard‘s match-day squad.
The Atletico Madrid star has got the winning mindset to help the Villans push for European football next season. However, he will only be a good, short-term signing if Gerrard manages to bring him to Villa Park during this summer transfer window.
At the moment, Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings remain Aston Villa‘s primary choice in attack. However, a striker of Suarez’s quality and experience will no doubt keep them on their toes in the race to earn a regular starting spot at the West Midlands club over the next couple of seasons.
